Mecca Masjid Hyderabad – What a Great Historical Place to be!

August 11, 2014

Visiting Hyderabad is inevitably connected to visiting the Charminar. So when I went for a tour of this twin city, I was definite to visit the Charminar and have a birds’ eye view of the city from the top. While I was rotating my SLR lens from one side to the other I saw the 400 years old mosque at a distance– Mecca Masjid Hyderabad. I have a Muslim colleague who told me about this mosque before I was coming to Hyderabad. He told me that it is one of Asia’s largest mosques. And being tolerant towards all religion and cultures I like to visit famous mosques, temples and churches.

The central arch of Mecca Masjid is built with bricks moulded from the holy soil of Mecca, a task commissioned by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. The mosque received its name due to this architectural excellence. The main hall of the mosque is huge and has the capacity of accommodating almost 10,000 worshipers at a time. You could get a glimpse of Muslim culture if you visit the mosque on a Friday. Women are not allowed to enter the mosque wearing short or body hugging outfits. As I witnessed two young girls wearing shorts, to be resisted at the entrance by the security and were compelled to wear a burkha before entering the holy space.

The little domes on the top of each minaret resemble those of Charminar and Golconda fort. The flock of pigeons in front of the mosque were eating grains spread for them. I love to see the pigeons flock together in the sky if they are raced by anyone. And to my wish a little boy suddenly ran towards them and the birds just flew together making noise with their wings. That particular sound always seems very pleasing to my ears and I was busy shooting their flight. The security of the Mecca Masjid Hyderabad has become very tight probably after the bombing of May 2007. The next destination of my interest was the Golconda Fort Hyderabad and I was hoping to like it there too.
