Places to Visit in Darjeeling - Himalayan Zoological Park Darjeeling

Darjeeling is one of the famous tourist destination in West Bengal in India. There are many tourist spots in this high-altitude destination and Himalayan Zoological Park Darjeeling is one of the favorite place of nature lovers here. Apart from being a natural preservation for animals, flora and fauna, it is a known breeding center also.

Himalayan Zoological Park

Formally known as Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, the zoo was established on 14th August 1958. The park was named in fond of the memory of Padmaja Naidu, sister of Sarojini Naidu. She was also the Governor of West Bengal. Now, Himalayan Zoological Park is one among the best zoos in the country, which also has international fame for its specialized breeding programs for endangered species animals like snow leopard and red panda etc.

Apart from the Indian species, you can also see Siberian tigers and Tibetan wolves etc. also at the zoo. Himalayan zoo is also famous as being the highest altitude zoological park in the world. It is well known among the foreign tourist for its natural beauty and captive breeding. It is the only such zoo in the entire world which breeds the Tibetan wolfs in captivity. It is also the first of kinds Asian zoo breeding Siberian Tiger and snow leopard.

General features

Himalayan Zoological Park is now the residence of many rarest and endangered species of animals from all over the world including; Red Pandas, Siberian Tigers, Tibetan Wolfs, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tahr, Mountain Goats, Himalayan Monal, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Salamander, Blood Pheasant, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan etc.

The park is also known for the rich flora and fauna and many species of birds here. It is an ideal destination for the nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and photo fanatics to be at. You can also see Himalayan Black Bear and capture some excellent snaps here. Entry fee is Rs. 30 per person for Indians and Rs. 100 for foreign tourists and extra Rs. 10 for camera.
