Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park Darjeeling – Largest High Altitude Zoo in India

I woke up early next morning the hotel was very cozy and convenient. I enjoyed the cool whether relishing my favorite coffee along with my favorite music from my newly purchased I phone. The next destination in my agenda was the Padmaja Naidu Zoological park. I took my breakfast and left .

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park Darjeeling is one of the major attraction near to the town, which his also the largest high altitude zoo in the country.

It is also called as the Darjeeling Zoo, which a large 67.56-acre natural habitat zoo near to Darjeeling town. The zoo became functional in 1958 and it is located at an altitude of about 7,000 feet above sea level. The zoo is also specializing in animal breeding to get adapted to the alpine conditions.

The zoo had successfully captivated breeding process for the endangered species of snow leopard, Himalayan wolf and red panda etc. More than about three hundred thousand visitors come to visit the zoo every year. This zoological park is named after famous Padmaja Naidu, who was the daughter of Sarojini Naidu, known as the Nightingale of India.

The zoo was established back in August of 1958 at Birch Hill near to Darjeeling, which was under the Department of Education of West Bengal Government with an objective of preserving the Himalayan fauna. The founder director of the zoo was Dilip Kumar Dey of Indian Forest Service with a vision to establish a high-altitude zoological park.

During its initial years, the prized possession of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park was a pair of Siberian tigers, which was a present by the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khruschev. The zoo now contains many endangered variety of animals as Snow Leopards, Himalayan Tahr, Mountain Goats, Red Pandas, Siberian Tigers, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Monal, Himalayan Salamander, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan and many other species of animals and birds.

I enjoyed the flora and fauna in the national park as it is highest national park in India.  I explored the national and took many photographs and returned to the hotel room.
